2003 Teachers of the Year

During the General Council in Washington, DC, the national Sunday School Department paid tribute to the national and district Teachers of the Year for 2003. A video focused on 42 teachers who are making disciples in Assemblies of God Sunday Schools.

General Superintendent Thomas Trask presented the 2003 national Teacher of the Year trophy to Russ and Sandy Conner, Davenport, Iowa, for over a quarter century of teaching God’s Word in Sunday School.

Following are the district Teacher of the Year winners and commendations from the persons who nominated them.

2003 Arizona Teacher of the Year

Charlie Roberts
Phoenix First Assembly of God

While trendy waves threaten the adult Sunday School ship, Charlie continues to go full-steam ahead, winning and building people through his class.

Charlie Roberts majors in Bible-centered lessons, an extensive network for follow-up and Body ministry, and flexibility in reaching all kinds of people. His class is noted for its benevolence for the poor, care for shut-ins, visitation of the sick, and the lost who find Jesus. Charlie has mentored others who minister in like manner.

2003 New Jersey Teacher of the Year

Timothy Montagano

Timothy is a gifted, articulate gentleman who loves Jesus and people.

Timothy Montagano served for many years as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for the state of New Jersey. As a diversion from his busy lifestyle and ministry, Timothy plays volleyball and basketball. He is a paraplegic, but that does not hamper him in any way.

All of my children are serving the Lord, and I attribute much of that to the faithfulness of Karen and her husband.

As part of her Sunday School ministry, Karen Heide started a Christmas outreach program that now provides gifts for over 200 children annually. She is also a public school teacher who leads prayer meetings for teachers in the school.

Betty loves her God and His Word. Nothing brings her more fulfillment than teaching His Word.

Betty Goggin-Barltes has taught the infant and the senior and been a long-term Bible Quiz coach. She has been both a pastor’s wife and a pastor. Recently she taught mentoring to the district’s women and spoke to thousands of teens at the district’s youth convention.

He motivates each member of his class to seek knowledge. At the same time he is always aware of their spiritual needs and guides them in Christian growth. Although he has taught in the El Cordero Sunday School for only six months, church leaders say they see the class making great progress. They give him high marks for his positive attitude, spirit of cooperation and eagerness to make improvements.

A student in Lola Marberry’s class says, "She keeps pressing on to the mark that was set by the great teacher, Paul."

Like Paul, the student uses the language of athletics: "Being a sports-minded person, the best I can sum up my impression of her teaching is to say she teaches Sunday School with the spirit of a batter driving in the winning run in the last game of the World Series!" Her love of teaching leads her to diligent preparation and consistent faithfulness. She has guided several others into the teaching ministry. She comes to the class with interesting material and stimulates active discussion.

2003 Wisconsin/Northern Michigan Teacher of the Year

Linda Mondloch has poured her life into her teaching ministry with junior students. The Sunday School leader who nominated her says, "I wish I could be in her class."

Linda’s classroom is always cheerful, with many interesting decorations and pictures. She uses several technological tools, and involves the students in learning games. She knows how to keep their interest. Moreover, her teaching has real substance. Each lesson is carefully planned. She encourages the students to apply them personally and in their families and schools. She works hard to help students memorize from the Word. She prepares weekly, personalized devotions for them.

2003 Southern California Teacher of the Year

Daniella Escobedo

Daniella Escobedo is dedicated to developing and discipling the next generation of Pentecostal believers.

Her special teaching strategy in every class session is to go beyond the Bible narrative and point out how it relates to our fundamental doctrines. Wherever it is appropriate, she puts special emphasis on the baptism of the Holy Spirit. She displays her love for students by dedicating many hours to preparation and prayer. She says her greatest desire is to see the Holy Spirit minister to each person, and inspire them all to minister to others.

Lillie Graham has faithfully served as a young adult Sunday School teacher for 13 years in the church where she was saved, and 31 years in the church where her husband is pastor.

She is a studious teacher, who provides in-depth, challenging, and practical material at each class session. Her love for the Lord and God’s Word are apparent as she combines the many ministry roles of the pastor’s wife with teaching responsibilities. Many students’ lives have been deeply influenced by her example as well as her teaching expertise. Conscientious and diligent are words the Sunday School Superintendent uses to describe her.

Kim Griggs has transformed her plain Sunday School room. She has done such a great job that the ladies Bible study group wants to start meeting in the preteen classroom.

Kim always goes beyond what is required, and gives of her personal time and resources. She makes regular contacts with her students; spends time with them away from church. Because she ministers so effectively to her own family, she teaches by example. Pre-teens respect her, call her a "best friend," and express a desire to be like her.

"Everyone needs a Miss Madaline," is the word from Faith Chapel. She is a great-grandmother and has taught several generations.

Madaline has unfailing faith and dedication to God. She has a pioneer spirit. Therefore, when she sees an opportunity for extending the teaching ministry in her church she is willing to lead the way. For example, she started the Missionettes program. She is willing to teach wherever she is needed. Her efforts have resulted in spiritual growth for individuals, and numerical growth for the church.

Tammy Hoback has a characteristic that makes her an exceptional teacher: she is always willing to go beyond the minimum requirements.

She prepares for her classes weeks in advance. She prays regularly for guidance, and for her students. She expends extra effort and contributes personal resources. The result is a spiritual atmosphere in the class sessions, often with spontaneous worship and speaking in tongues. Her class ministers in homes and retirement facilities. Her work is evident to the congregation so that the church looks upon her as a valued spiritual leader.

Wendy is an excellent teacher, who is also a friend to teenage girls.

Wendy Alexander devoted her life to teaching and grew from being a timid person to an overwhelming stick of dynamite for the cause of Jesus. In personal devotion and spiritual development she models what she teaches and so becomes an ideal guide and instructor of teenagers. She deeply appreciates her role in the church family and joyfully declares that she "would not change it for the world!"

If I had six teachers just like Mary, we would have the most powerful Sunday School program in the state!

Her pastor calls Mary Barbour "an outstanding lady of faith." Her dedication to God’s Word and her love for children come together in dynamic and productive teaching. While she is tender and loving to her young charges, she is extremely strong, undaunted by circumstances, and faithful in every aspect of life and ministry. After about 40 years of teaching, she continues to be creative, making good use of resources and changing methods that appeal to the children.

Zepha Boggess has taught preschoolers for 12 years. The members of her church say they feel blessed to have their little ones watched over by a person of her character and wisdom. She shows the love and passion of Jesus in the way she cares for them and guides them, at their level, toward an understanding of His love. Her concern for spiritual growth and well-being of the very young has been impressive among parents, and so contributes to the growth of the church.

As a woman in her 20’s, Joanna Coscia discovered her passion and calling was to teach first graders. Now at age 74, she has faithfully taught three generations. Two words describe her teaching ability: excellence and commitment. Her teaching combines instruction, love, and dedication. To her, each student is precious. She brings the life of God’s Word to young hearts.

She says that to be with her students is a joy. Her goal is to help them discover and develop their gifts and guide them in Christian living.

"To have a Sunday School teacher so well learned in the things of God is truly a blessing," says a student in her young adults class.

Angela Dodson has the special distinction of being praised by her pastor and her daughter as a truly competent teacher. Mrs. Dodson is a founder of the Christian school sponsored by her church, which now has over 200 students in grades K through 10. Then she started a highly successful young adult Sunday School class. She is known for her willingness to discuss issues and help students apply biblical principles in everyday situations. She has filled in for the pastor at Wednesday night Bible studies, and even takes turns in the nursery when needed.

Gail Downie patiently teaches not only the curriculum, but also a godly lifestyle.

"She comes on time every week and is very prepared," says the Sunday School superintendent. She starts each class on a positive note, smiling, welcoming the students, and speaking to each one in a personal way. She sets an example of how to be a godly woman. Following the practice of good teaching, she expresses high expectations for her students, and looks forward to more training opportunities. She suggested a system of junior membership in the church, and more guidance for children in understanding of the Communion ceremony, water baptism, and baptism in the Holy Spirit.

"He feeds my spirit and teaches me to apply God’s Word in everyday living"

Hoyt Ivey is known among his class members for three qualities essential in Christian education: he is spiritual, practical, and attentive to class members. "Each Sunday we receive what we need for that week," one member declares, "He presents practical messages, led by the Holy Spirit." He is known among the members of his church for his faithfulness and stability, success in his profession, and devotion to his family. Fifty-four persons who have been in his classes wrote to nominate him for a Teacher of the Year award.

2003 North Dakota Teacher of the Year

Sharon Keller has been teacher, mom, big sister, and friend to numerous young persons during 17 years of Christian teaching.

Mrs. Keller never fails to produce a fresh, exciting program for kids. She has developed a way of teaching fourth through seventh grades so that everyone feels included. Her activity areas fill two classrooms. During the past summers, she has incorporated vacation Bible school material with the regular Sunday School curriculum. Her students form such friendship with her that they are reluctant to move on to higher grades.

She helps them become great instructors. Outside the classroom, she models what she teaches. She is one of the best teachers I’ve had the privilege of working with."

Edward Loo is called "friend" and "father" by students and co-workers.

He helps students discover and develop spiritual gifts, guiding them into places of ministry. He develops projects and encourages students to be active in the church and community. One of his co-workers says, "He reflects the image of Jesus to our students. He cares, loves, and has a strong passion to influence the lives of young people." He is known for faithfulness to his church and for consistent cooperation with the pastor and other church leaders. He takes advantage of opportunities for training and learning fresh methods of teaching.

2003 Ohio Teacher of the Year

His church leaders praise Tom Maidment as a person who models Christ in his life and teaching.

Tom has faithfully and diligently taught junior high boys for 16 years. He involves himself in their lives; attending sports events, school activities, and graduations. Through their difficult years of growing and maturing, Tom sets an example for young men. He guides them in developing Christian character, behavior, and speech. One church leader says, "We are so thankful to have him teaching the young men of our group what it means and looks like to be a man of God."

2003 Southeastern Spanish Teach of the Year

Because she teaches in both Spanish and English Annette Males has been an important key to the growth of multicultural classes.

She is known as an outstanding teacher in the children’s department of the Sunday School, with a unique and contagious manner that encourages both students and co-workers. She is considered a "stepping stone" for newcomers and also for those who will go on to higher levels in Christian education. She is a gifted storyteller who makes the Bible live and draws in new kids to keep her classes growing. She is attentive to lesson objectives and able to focus on applications appropriate for each student. Church leaders consider her a role model for both children and adults.

Esther Otwell is a captivating teacher, a person of prayer, and she regularly "visits the fatherless and widows in their affliction."

She has taught English at two universities. Her students call her "a teacher’s teacher" and "the best teacher I ever had." Numerous members of her church wrote glowing reports of their experiences as her students. Although she has taught Bible classes for 40 years, she carefully prepares each lesson. Each person in her class feels uplifted as well as receiving scriptural enlightenment. She sets an example of Christian living, and helps others to become competent and enthusiastic teachers.

Noel Ruiz has the special distinction of being a teacher of teachers. A co-worker says, "We have all learned from him the principles of Spirit-led Bible teaching.

He has taught classes for children, teens, youth, adults, and married couples. In addition, he has organized and taught workshops in Christian education, and has been a coordinator for the Sunday School Department of the church. He brings to the church his training and experience in public education. As a bilingual teacher, developing strategies and lesson plans in both Spanish and English, he has been recognized with awards from the Rochester City School District, SUNY Brockport College, and Rochester radio stations. Most important, he loves the Lord and his students. He is a consistent role model, very creative, and always ready to take advantage of opportunities for more training in his field.

Mike Shymoniak is a man of God whose heart’s desire is to impart truth and understanding of God’s Word.

Always dependable and faithful in every aspect of worship and service, he is especially dedicated to the church’s teaching ministry. He prepares the Bible lessons carefully and presents them with enthusiasm that captures the students’ attention. Using a variety of methods, he encourages students to make personal applications. He prays with students, helps them grow spiritually, and challenges them to witness for Christ. The pastor says it is obvious that Mike’s commitment to teaching grows out of his deep concern for lost souls. "He is dedicated to the success of our church, and to the kingdom of God!"

"All of those traits for the evaluation of excellence in teaching apply to Phyllis Simmons," her pastor declares.

Besides teaching her Sunday School class, Phyllis faithfully attends prayer meeting on Monday evening and teaches a Bible study on Tuesday. Mother of four children, she models Christian nurturing and concern for spiritual development. Each person is important as a Bible student, to learn God’s Word and apply it in living. And each is important as a person to be loved and guided. Phyllis makes regular home and hospital visits. She ministers to hurting, lonely people, giving generously of herself and her resources.

At 80 years, Doris Smith is still active and aggressive in ministry.

She teaches the adult class, and she inspires persons at every age level. With her, there is no generation gap. Teens and college students love to glean her wisdom. To her students and many others she is counselor and mentor. She is an evangelistic catalyst for the church through her promotion of bussing in unchurched kids. In a sense, she teaches everyone in the church and many in the community. She is admired and respected by all who know her.

Tonya Tilley feels that every soul is precious in His sight and no handicap can stop anyone from learning about Jesus.

She accepts her own experience of two heart transplants and daily medications as God’s leading to develop a Sunday School class called Challengers for disabled and handicapped children. In addition, she is Missionettes coordinator, a leader in children’s church, and teaches a class on Wednesday evening. The Sunday School leader says, "Tonya is always crafting up things and preparing for the little ones, and is always on her toes ready for the antics and hard to field questions! Not only is she a gifted teacher, but her life is an example from which we all learn."

Enefiok Umana is a person with many Christ like characteristics. He looks for the best in people and teaches to develop their gifts.

He is a diligent and consistent student of the Bible. He has special ability to communicate his knowledge and understanding to others in such a way that many lives are influenced. He is faithful to his calling and very much a part of his students’ lives. He gives much time and effort to building strong relationships.

The way Maggie Valentin prepares her classroom and lessons provides proof that she genuinely cares about her students.

Beginning in a small church, she taught all the children in one group. Now she has a growing class of third and fourth graders. She feels that the teaching ministry is a special calling, takes every opportunity for training, and has earned certification in the All Church Training Series. Her pastor says, "Maggie Valentin is one of the most devoted Sunday School teachers I have ever known. She is a cherished asset to our church. She is a prime example of a Christian model and teacher."

2003 Gulf Latin American Teacher of the Year

"I would like to thank Christina for being a wonderful teacher for my family," says a father of three young children. "She is a wonderful friend to us and I am astounded by her great effort."

Several other parents and children have added their voices to declare that Christina Vargas is "the best teacher" and "she makes us feel that we should love God and also other people." Soon after accepting the Lord as her Savior this young woman began to work with the pastors of a small church, to develop a growing Sunday School and children’s ministry. Now there are more children than adults in the church. The pastors give credit for this to Christina and her husband who have dedicated themselves to touching the lives of children and their families.

2003 Alabama Teacher of the Year

Maxine Wahl is known in her church as an excellent teacher. Even more important, she enjoys being with her students, makes time for them outside of class, and models Christian living.

Her pastor expresses appreciation for her special ability to make God’s Word applicable to each of her student’s lives. Maxine’s burden is to make sure that everyone in the class is led closer to Jesus. She is to determined to see that every student is saved. After 32 years of teaching, she still involves herself personally with each one. Her ministry reaches beyond class time. She maintains a special relationship with other teachers, strongly supports the Sunday School in many ways, and cooperates enthusiastically in the church’s total ministry.

2003 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year

Betty White’s class is named Mysteries of the Kingdom. She teaches two duplicate sessions on Sunday mornings so more students will have opportunities to attend. Each session continues to grow.

Betty is invited to speak at women’s retreats and various conferences, but Sunday School is her chosen ministry. She has a library that is said to "rival those in Bible colleges." Also, she uses e-mail and a web page to keep in touch with students, and provides written and recorded lessons for them to share with friends. One of her students says, "Betty would make an excellent professor in a Christian university. Her teaching is exacting. She holds true to biblical interpretation and fits scriptural words and applications together in a most appropriate way, more like college courses. Besides, she has sweet spirit and is loved by all the students."

2003 Northwest District Teacher of the Year

Kathleen Widdows has taught Sunday School for many years. She has remained distinctively in tune with changing cultures while teaching with competence and faithfulness to Scripture.

"She is an excellent teacher," says a longtime student. "She goes into details beyond what one would expect. There is an anointing in her class that makes us know the Holy Spirit is leading her. The way she explains makes us know she has spent many hours searching and praying for guidance. The result is that she brings her students to the point where they can focus and understand." The church leaders and members who speak of her often use the word faithful. Her life and service have been models of faithfulness to the church and faithfulness to the Word.

Sandy Wilson is a gifted teacher who feels a special calling to work with preschoolers.

Starting in a new church, Sandy gave herself in complete dedication to Christian education. She is always prepared, arrives early, and is enthusiastically ready for her students. She loves them and they return that love to her. Sandy pursues opportunities to grow by attending conferences and by reading materials related to children’s ministries. She is always ready to be involved in outreach to the community. In the church and outside she advocates for preschoolers by making others aware of their needs, and by seeing that age-appropriate activities are provided for them.
