Connect

Serve

The five greatest needs of the human personality are significance, support, stability, stimulation, and self-expression. Getting connected to a church family best satisfies these needs. God has wired us for connection. So just as the early church met together and ate together, so our church body needs to be connected to each other. When people are connected they will achieve more.

Connecting Recommendations:

Harvesters1plants60px

The Harvester's Handbook - One PLANTs One Discipling Training Manual (038175) Growth-focused ministry tool trains  people in your church to mentor others through friendship and informal one-to-one coaching. This is a big help to pastors! Your church members will be ready to disciple new Christians and help them mature in their walk with Jesus. In turn, those newly matured Christians will be ready to repeat the process. They will coach other new converts as they have been coached. It's an effective ongoing process.

HarvestersYCManual60px

The Harvester's Handbook - Young Christian Manual (038173) A powerful, user friendly workbook to help new believers of all ages grow in conversation and cooperation with Jesus in everyday living. It will help them understand the Bible, develop an ear for God's voice, live obedient lives, and build true friendships with both believers and unbelievers. Most effective when used with a discipler (coach) using the Harvester's Handbook - One PLANTs One Discipling Training Manual - or a study partner. (The lessons are photocopiable [only] for personally assisting other new believers.)

Shepherding

Shepherding a Woman’s Heart: A New Model for Effective Ministry to Women (382109) Women in pain populate every congregation. Left to themselves, many will become discouraged and leave the church. But pastors cannot adequately care for the needs of everyone. Beverly White Hislop has written Shepherding a Woman's Heart to challenge pastors to infuse to women in their churches with the same spirit that moves them to care for their flock. This amazing resource provides substantial guidance on how to properly equip healthy women to come forward and nurture hurting women.

The Fresh Eyes assessment is a great way to help a church assess its hospitality as it relates to visitors. It looks at the visitor’s experience as they are greeted at the front door, as they check their children into the nursery or kids’ programs, as they understand the dynamics of a service, any fellowship points at the conclusion of the service, and how they’re treated as they leave the building. For more information concerning the Fresh Eyes Guest Assessment, please contact Rick Allen at rallen@ag.org.

Jim and Casper Go to Church (030110) "Is this what Jesus told you guys to do?" In 2006, Christian leader Jim Henderson hired atheist Matt Casper to join him in visiting twelve of America’s best- and least-known churches, including Rick Warren’s Saddleback and Joel Osteen’s Lakewood.

Week after week, this spiritual odd couple attended services at churches all over the country. Now you can hear about their experiences and reactions to each church. Jim and Casper’s articulate, sometimes humorous, and always insightful dialogue offers believers a new view of an environment in which we’ve become overly comfortable: the church. And it models an important transition from "defending the faith" to "defending the space" relational space for authentic, respectful dialogue and friendship with nonbelievers.

Serving as Church Greeter (035407) Whether a church is large or small, often the first person one encounters is the church greeter. Topics include: the ministry of the greeter, the need for warm-hearted greeters, a user-friendly foyer, better ways of doing things, and the parking lot ministry.

Give guests a tour. At the end of the service, offer a tour of your church facilities to guests. This gives you the opportunity to give them a quick overview of the church and the various ways your church can connect with each member of their family.

Offer a pastor’s dessert once a quarter. Each quarter, host a dessert reception for guests. This gives them the opportunity to meet not only the pastoral staff but lay leadership as well.

Host a new member class. This helps newcomers connect to the church, its purpose and mission, and get them plugged in. A great resource to help you develop a new member class is the We Build People CD-ROM (260230).

Alive in Christ (020481) Teaches new believers the basics of the Christian walk. Written for the new convert, each book builds on the one before it, as students discover through personal study how to apply God’s principles to everyday living. It is an excellent follow-up resource for the local church, campus ministry, or multi-denominational youth rally. Great to use one-on-one or in small group settings.

Adventures in Faith(020135) Welcome to Holsom: Adventures in Faith instantly grabs kids with cool art and an enthralling story about Hugh’s transformation from budding thief to follower of Jesus. Kids learn vital practices of Christian living that keep them growing in faith while preparing them for service, things like salvation, prayer, Bible study, witnessing, baptism, reputation, and community service. The story pauses for short journaling sections throughout that allow kids to respond with their own thoughts, leading to teachable moments. Talk about a great new way to spiritually grow your kids!
